Autumn Radiance: All About Fall/Autumn Haircare & Color

See this content in the original post

Hi dear readers! I hope every one of you is fully enjoying the transition from scorching summers to a much-relieved autumn fall. The winds have become somewhat merciful as well as the atmosphere a bit dry. Yes! A sure sign of the approaching winter days, autumn has been one of my favorite seasons of the year. And though it lasts very little, it does provide enough time for me to experience a bit of winter blues (😊) and transition to a new hairstyling & care strategy.

So, in this blog, I will exclusively focus on the fall season and how it affects your hair; why hair loss in autumn, strategizing hair care, and the best hairstyles/colors you can go for in the autumn. Let’s begin with the effects first!

Seasonal hair shedding, also known as seasonal hair loss, is one of the most prominent effects of seasonal transitions. It is a natural phenomenon that happens to most people.

But the weight of hair loss which is carried out during autumn is a quite natural response to the environmental changes taking place during the fall season, despite the exigence in hair fall as compared to other seasons. Let us then first tackle the issue of the fall season’s connection to your hair fall.

Understanding the connection between your hair and the fall season is pivotal in dealing with fall hair loss. There are quite a few factors that influence excessive hair fall in the Autumn. Let’s review them below:

Sudden changes in Climate:
This is the foremost factor that contributes to hair fall in autumn. A radical drop in temperature and sudden vanishing of the humidity in the air, along with a slight decrease in sunlight’s exposure to the ground, directly affect the hair follicles. These weather changes make the air thin, and without humidity, moisture in the air decreases significantly. This is why your hair may feel—well—just like lifeless and cracked leaves, which is the hallmark feature of Autumn.

Dietary changes: Nutritional changes to your diet during the fall season may also trigger autumn hair loss. According to a study by Dermatology Practical & Conceptual Journal, deficiencies in the following dietary components will trigger hair loss:

  • Iron

  • Selenium

  • Vitamin D

  • Vitamin A

  • Vitamin E

  • Proteins

  • Amino Acids

Will you be changing your diet during the fall season 2024? If so, make sure you keep a balanced intake of all these nutrients.

Hormonal changes: These are the least of all factors, but with very powerful influence over your psychology and mood. Because hormones play a very vital role in regulating hair growth, a seasonal disturbance will surely trigger hair loss. This is especially evident in the autumn because critical changes in sunlight and atmospheric temperatures significantly impact hormone levels (you don’t need to see the scientific evidence of this, right😊)

Your haircare routine will need a bit of tweak in the fall season. Of course, fall impacts your hair more than any other season that is why there are some things you need to do to keep your hair in good shape.

Below are some of the things I will recommend to you for autumn haircare.

End Your Daily Wash Routine -:

Autumn is not the season for a regular hair wash. There is already a lack of moisture for your hair since the air is quite dry during the fall season, and regular washing will further deprive your hair of the much-needed moisture.

However, your hair wash routine also depends on your regional location and environment. Mostly, fall is always a dry season almost everywhere in the world. But in some regions, such as countries close to the Equator, there is always some amount of sunlight and humidity available in the air. You get the idea, right? Let me break the schedule for you below:

Equatorial climate: You should wash your hair at least once in two days if you live in, or near, the equator (e. g. Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Kenya, Indian Subcontinent, UAE, etc.) during autumn.

Northern climate: If you reside in the Northern Hemisphere (e. g. Europe, North America, Canada, Russia, etc.), you should wash your hair not more than twice a week during fall.

Southern Hemisphere: Like in the North Hemisphere, the best hair wash routine during autumn in the southern countries (e. g. New Zealand, Australia, South America, Argentina, Zimbabwe, etc.) is twice a week.

A Balanced Diet is Necessary -:

As I have also mentioned above in this narrative, the deficiencies in some of the major nutrients needed for shiny, tamed, and healthy hair can bring about a serious decline in your locks during the fall season. There is only one way to ensure that no such thing can happen to your hair in the autumn – a balanced diet!

It is understandable that our dietary habits are largely dependent on the weather conditions we live in, but pure science has always stressed the importance of a balanced diet in all seasons. Among other nutrients, make sure you keep feeding your body a regular amount of protein, vitamins E, C, and B, biotin, iron, and omega-7.

A combination of all these nutrients will help immensely in keeping your hair looking shiny, healthy, moist, and robust against the adverse effects of the autumn’s dehydrated and pollinated air.

Get Your Scalp Checked & Hair Trimmed -:

This one had to be done right at the onset of the fall season. Whichever hairstylist or dermatologist you go to, ensure you make your appointment asap! You may wonder why I am including this high-profile “Dermatologist” word here. Well, the simple reason is that a professional and academically certified person is the best in the business when it comes to analyzing skin-related issues.

He/she will examine your scalp and prepare you for the upcoming autumn. However, an expert-level hairstylist can also help tend to your scalp and hair needs, but just so you are convinced and assured, a dermatologist’s visit for your scalp will always be good.

As for your hair trimming, that is essentially the part in which a hairdresser comes to your aid. If you haven't done so in the last 4 to 6 weeks, it is the best time to get your trimmed by your hairstylist. All the over-stylings and brushing that were done in the summer months – especially without a heat protectant – will take its toll.

Especially during the autumn season, when hair is devoid of moisture, untrimmed splits will easily make their way up to the hair follicles and the result is excessive hair loss. So that you may not face this situation during this fall season, make sure you get your hair trimmed by your hairstylist.

And since we have now taken care of the hair matter for the entirety of the fall of 2024, let’s now explore some of the trendy hairstyles for autumn this year!

So, cometh the fall with its new quota of hairstyles, right? What is on your mind, if I ask you specifically? Is it Hollywood Waves? Chic headbands, deep brunette, braided buns, ‘90s pixie cut, or any other? That’s true that all these hairstyles are pretty much in trend for the autumn of 2024 (source: Byrdie), but what if I give you something different? Something light, simplistic, yet beautiful and very fall-savvy? Well, if you have any doubts, check out these recent hairstyles/colors we have done for the autumn:

But these are just some of the recent cuts I did – there are a whole lot more styles out there! My idea with this is to not actually “DICTATE” you on what you should have on your head, but rather what to keep note of when choosing a hairstyle for the fall season.

Since it is a season that is full of dry air with a lack of much-needed water content for your hair, it is always recommended to go for hairstyles that are loose, instead of tightly-knit ones. However, this does not mean that you cannot go for the latter ones. The only reason for not recommending tightly knitted hairstyles is that they will require a high amount of maintenance during dry fall air.

The loose or short hairstyles, on the other hand, are fall-friendly; requiring less maintenance, easily adaptable, and can be styled in a variety of ways. And don’t get me wrong: Like the long hair locks, the short ones are pretty much trendy for the autumn of 2024.

After styling and cutting comes the final nail in the coffin: Hair color. Fall hair colors, unlike the shady season itself, do look quite radiant, sparkling, and noticeable at first look. Most of the time when you search for ideas about autumn hair colors, some suggestions are always there in the search results as they are most widely adopted.

However, you must always keep in mind that just going for a popular option doesn’t justify your time and money. You must also know your hair type beforehand when deciding on a fall hair color. Of course, no one wants to be in a position where they end up looking awkward instead of appealing, right? With that being said, here are some of the best and most popular fall hair colors:

  • Copper tone

  • Caramel ribbons

  • Coffee Brown

  • Balayage

  • Red

  • Ash-blonde

  • Apricot Blonde

  • Auburn balayage

  • Chestnut hues

  • Golden blonde

  • Honey hues

  • Beachy brunette

  • Cayenne copper

  • Cherry cola red

  • Latte brunette

  • Cinnamon hues

(Source: Google)

And these are just some of the more well-known ones that I have listed here – the list continues further! So, which one of these will you be going for in the autumn of 2024? Let’s find out about your hair type and texture first.

Best Fall Hair Colors for Brunettes -:

For your beautiful brunette hair, there is a smashing pack of colors on this fall season. Anything around smoky deep shades like coffee brown, dark chocolate, brown balayage, chestnut waves, or just simply red. To me, it seems adorning any of these brunette fall hair colors this autumn would make you look special.

Here are some of the examples below:

Best Fall Hair Colors for Blondes -:

When autumn comes, to be very honest, blondes have a limited variety of shades to paint their hair with. But have no worries! Those limited blonde fall colors bring out the most in them. So, I suggest going for golden blonde shades or red streaks with coppery style. Other blonde hair color variations (e. g. ash blonde shades) would not jam well with the season’s atmosphere.

Here are some visual examples of what I am talking about:

Now when it comes to generic ones, I can only go as far as to suggest that choose one that suits your texture and hairstyle. Having said that, there is still an abundance of fall hair colors left from which every hair texture and style can easily benefit. So, here are some of my suggestions:

Sun-kissed blonde:
A perfect autumn hair color for those blondes who have long-choppy layers.

Burgundy hue: Just love it myself! One of the most adaptable of all, whether it's seasons or hairstyles! Whether you have short or long hair; textured, straight, layered, choppy, etc., red burgundy hue is always a trendy hair color for the fall season.

Red shades: red shades, such as dimensional reds, are another fall hair color category that suits almost all types of hairstyles. However, it is more particular with shoulder-length bobs but that shouldn’t keep anyone from adorning this color on any other hairstyle. To get the perfect shade, go for a lighter tone at the ends with a deep shade in the roots.

Chocolate brownies: Oh no! Not as a sweet piece of cake to eat 😊, but the dark chocolatey brown is one of the most sought-after hair colors on this autumn. Especially for brunettes, chocolate dark brown (a.k.a chocolate silk) is a wonder to behold. Many celebs, such as Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Amal Clooney, Salma Hayek, etc., have adorned this sexy and luscious fall hair color in autumn 2024, and many times previously. So, why you should remain behind?

Buttery blonde: Another of the finest fall-season blonde hair colors on this list, buttery blonde is a fine mixture of natural blonde with both warm/cool-toned highlights. Ideally, this hair color is suitable for voluminous hair, but other hairstyles can also benefit from it.

These five fall hair colors are the best in my recommendation for the autumn of 2024. This list, however, is far from comprehensive since many other fall hair colors can be applied to your hair, but including them all over here will probably bore you reading this much 😉So, let’s just end here on a good note.
